Role Purpose
The Head – Design, PT&D is responsible for providing strategic and functional leadership to the design function across the Power Transmission & Distribution business. The role will drive design excellence, technical governance, innovation, cost optimization and timely design delivery across transmission lines, substations, distribution networks and associated power infrastructure projects. The role will ensure integration of multidisciplinary engineering disciplines to deliver safe, reliable, constructible, cost-effective and client-compliant design solutions aligned with project requirements, execution milestones and business objectives. The role will also lead design standardization, knowledge management, value engineering, digital engineering and continuous improvement initiatives across the PT&D portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Design Leadership: Lead the PT&D design strategy, governance, standards and workflows across transmission, substations, distribution and associated engineering disciplines. Ensure timely, compliant and high-quality design delivery aligned with business and client requirements.
- Design Delivery and Technical Oversight: Oversee end-to-end design delivery, reviews, approvals, IFC drawings and construction support. Drive design optimization, value engineering, constructability, digital engineering, BIM/GIS and timely resolution of technical issues and revisions.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with BU, Projects, Tendering, Procurement, Construction and Commercial teams to align design with project requirements. Provide technical inputs for bids, BOQ/MTO, specifications, feasibility and engineering optimization.
- Stakeholder Management: Manage clients, consultants, Independent Engineers, authorities, utilities and design agencies for approvals, clarifications and technical decisions.
- Design Quality, Compliance & Governance: Ensure compliance with CEA, IS/IEC, utility and contractual standards. Drive QA/QC, standardization, audits and technical risk mitigation.
- Knowledge Management & Innovation: Maintain design knowledge repositories and promote R&D, innovation, lessons learned and design-to-cost initiatives.
- People Management: Build multidisciplinary teams, strengthen technical capabilities and promote accountability and collaboration.
- Team & Leadership Development: Develop technical leadership, succession pipelines and capabilities in BIM, GIS, automation and emerging engineering technologies.
Indicative Experience and Exposure
- Master’s degree in engineering / project management preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical / civil / mechanical engineering or equivalent.
- 15+ years of experience in design/engineering leadership roles within the Power Transmission & Distribution / Power EPC sector, preferably with large-scale transmission and substation projects.
- Strong experience in engineering and design of transmission lines, substations and switchyards.
- Experience in handling multidisciplinary design coordination and engineering consultants.
- Exposure to project execution, procurement, commissioning and client coordination.
- Experience in large-scale power transmission EPC projects will be preferred.
